Four dental hygienists will be recognized for their service to dentistry and dental patients during a ceremony for the 2018 Sunstar/RDH Award of Distinction on August 2 in National Harbor, Md.
The four recipients were chosen by a panel of judges coordinated by Sunstar Americas and RDH magazine. The ceremony will be hosted during the RDH Under One Roof conference at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center.
The 2018 recipients of the Sunstar/RDH Award of Distinction are:
Susan Cotten, RDH, BSDH, OMT, Integrative RDH, Westminster, Colorado
Jasmin Haley, RDH, MSDH, CDA, Randallstown, Maryland
Rhoda Kublickis, RDH, MHS, FAADH, FEMORS, Lauderdale by the Sea, Florida
Lesley Tuomi, RDH, BSDH, REF, Richfield, Minnesota
“Since 2002, the Award of Distinction has taken the opportunity to identify dental hygienists who have embraced change and made a difference on a broad spectrum,” said Jackie Sanders, manager of professional relations at Sunstar. “This year, these selected individuals will join 117 previous award recipients, becoming members of a distinguished group of dental hygiene professionals. We are impressed with the achievements of these honorees and proud to honor and recognized all Sunstar/RDH Award of Distinction recipients.”
Cotten was praised for her treatment of a cancer patient, “Evelyn,” while a member of the Donny Osmond Make a Difference Program in 2011. The experience led Cotten to start a business, Oral Cancer Consulting, that aids dentists and dental hygienists in developing screening protocols for oral cancer. She is also a regional coordinator for the Oral Cancer Foundation and works at the Colorado Coalition for the Homeless as an integrative dental hygienist.
Haley is a member of the Preparing the Future program through the Jacques Initiative at the University of Maryland School of Medicine that helps educate local communities about HIV and hepatitis C. She is an adjunct educator at Howard Community College, a podcaster, and a presenter of programs of interest to the dental hygiene profession while managing a business, Beyond the Prophy.
Kublickis, who is a professional educator with Xlear Inc., was singled out for her work as a dental forensic expert since 2008, responding to mass fatality and criminal incidents, providing closure for strangers dealing with a loss. She is also an active volunteer for numerous dental charity events in her community.[Native Advertisement]
Tuomi provides dental services for underprivileged students in North Minneapolis. She leads a school screening program consisting of various health professionals that provides dental, vision, hearing, and nutritional services. She is most proud of her unwavering commitment to her community.
All four recipients will be profiled in more detail in the September 2018 issue of RDH magazine.
